What to Wear for Your Fall Mini Session | Denver Family Photographer

One of the biggest questions I get before a fall mini session? “What should we wear?!”

Totally understandable! Coordinating outfits can feel overwhelming, but I promise it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re dressing toddlers, teens, or your partner who “doesn’t care what they wear,” I’ve got you covered with tips to help your crew look and feel amazing.

Keep It Simple and Coordinated (Not Matchy)

When it comes to family photo outfits, the goal is to coordinate without matching exactly. Think color palette, not uniforms. Neutrals with warm tones like beige, rust, olive, cream, or mustard look stunning against Colorado’s fall backdrops—and they photograph beautifully in that golden evening light.

Start with Mom’s Outfit

Let’s be real, mom is usually the MVP of getting everyone ready, so it makes sense to start with your outfit first. Choose something you feel confident and comfortable in, then build the rest of the family’s looks around that. Long flowy dresses, cozy sweaters, or layered pieces always look great in fall!

Add Texture and Layers

Fall is the perfect time to play with textures! Think knits, linen, denim, corduroy, or a soft scarf. Layers not only look great in photos, but they also add movement, depth, and comfort if the temps drop a bit.

Avoid Distracting Patterns or Logos

Stay away from bold prints, neon colors, or anything with big logos. These can take attention away from your faces and the beautiful connections you’re there to capture. Instead, opt for solids or subtle patterns like plaid or florals.

Let the Kids Be Comfortable

If your little one hates tights or itchy collars, don’t force it. Happy, comfy kids = better photos. Keep their outfits flexible and let them move, snuggle, and play freely.

Bonus Tip: Lay It All Out Ahead of Time

Once you’ve gathered your outfits, lay everything out together and snap a quick photo. It helps to see the colors and textures together, and you might catch anything that feels out of place.

Need help? I’m always just a message away.

You don’t need to go over the top. The most important thing is that you and your family feel like yourselves. When you’re comfortable and connected, that’s when the magic happens.

Want those dreamy fall photos? There’s still time to grab your spot before they’re gone!
