If you’re planning fall mini sessions or a full family session this year, you’re probably wondering one thing: how to prepare toddlers for family photos.
Right now you’re thinking, “What if they just don’t cooperate
First, take a deep breath, you’re not alone.
As a Denver family photographer, I’ve photographed hundreds of toddlers over the years, and I can promise you this:
They don’t have to be perfectly behaved to create beautiful photos. Some of my favorite images happen when kids are running, laughing, cuddling with mom, or exploring instead of looking at the camera.
A little preparation can make a huge difference. Keep reading for my best tips on how to prepare your little ones.

A few days before your session, start talking about it. Keep it simple and say something like “We’re going to play outside together and have our pictures taken!”
Avoid making it sound like something they have to perform for. The goal should be getting them excited, not feeling pressure.
This is one of the biggest mistakes parents make. Instead of asking your toddler to smile or behave perfectly, let them know you’re going to spend time together as a family and have fun. If you can remove the expectation for perfect smiles and make room for play, the genuine laughter and smiles will follow.
If possible, schedule your family photo session around your child’s normal routine.
Speaking as a mom myself, a rested toddler is much happier than an overtired one.
If naps don’t go as planned, don’t worry, we’ll adjust and take our time.
A few non-messy snacks can be lifesavers.
Think:
Avoid chocolate or brightly colored treats that can stain clothes or mouths. Don’t forget water, too.
Whether it’s a favorite stuffed animal or a small blanket, having something familiar nearby can help your child feel more relaxed.
Sometimes those comfort items even become some of the sweetest photos.

One of the biggest reasons parents choose a professional Denver family photographer is because you don’t have to manage every moment yourself.
I’ll guide your family through the session with games, movement, and prompts that keep little ones engaged.
There is no expectation that anyone will stand perfectly still and smile for twenty minutes.
Your toddler is watching you. If you’re stressed, they’ll notice. If you’re laughing, playing, and enjoying the experience, they’ll usually do the same.
Some of the most meaningful family photos come from those in-between moments while playing and exploring.
Absolutely.
In fact, many parents find fall mini sessions are the perfect option for young children.
Because sessions are only about twenty minutes long, they’re just the right length to capture genuine smiles before little ones lose interest.
If your family is looking for updated photos this fall, mini sessions are a simple, relaxed way to document this season of life.
