As a Denver family photographer, I spend a lot of time chasing that perfect golden light. While some places are incredible for family photos, others are perfect for packing a picnic, taking an easy hike, or enjoying a weekend adventure with your kids.

For a few short weeks every September and October, the mountains light up with golden aspens, winding roads become scenic drives, and even a quick afternoon outside feels a little more special.

1. Kenosha Pass

Jefferson County

If you’ve ever seen photos of Colorado covered in brilliant golden aspens, there’s a good chance they were taken here. Kenosha Pass is one of the most iconic places in the state to experience fall.

The drive alone is worth it, but there are also several easy trails if you’d like to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenery.

Tip: Visit on a weekday if possible. Once the leaves peak, weekends get busy quickly and traffic and parking become more difficult.
